I wanted to create this project because I have always had an interest in music trends. At first, I started by analyzing the Billboard Hot 100 for just this year, but I quickly realized there was not enough data to map out significant long-term changes. To fix that, I shifted my focus to include the Billboard Hot 100 for every year since the chart’s inception in 1958. Looking across these decades highlights fascinating shifts in musical trends, from changing genre dominance and song lengths to evolving lyric topics and audio production styles over time. Ultimately, this project might be interesting to a broad audience because practically everybody listens to music, making it exciting to trace how our favorite songs and sounds have transformed due to different cultural, technological, and historical factors.
